    Eve Meets Medusa

    In this chapter, Yael Cameron creatively merges the myths of Eve and Medusa via the practice of Hélène Cixous’s feminist theory of writing: écriture féminine. Through an exercise of the poetic, Eve and Medusa are invoked in full embrace of their joy and suffering. The writing performs a series of escapes from the economy of the patriarchal text, giving rise to alternative possibilities that lie dormant in the margins of the two myths: a shadow-reading. Drawing on Cixousian imagery of the orange, the gaze, the night, seas and serpents, and flight, this chapter makes a case for the mythical woman’s unceasing and jubilant arrival into the world.

    Disobedience: Reading the Sacred Text Otherwise

    In this article, I reflect on the violence of sacred texts towards the lesbian community, drawing on insights from Naomi Alderman’s novel Disobedience and the 2017 film of the same name directed by Sebastián Lelio. Alderman’s novel has a striking point of difference to the film, and this is the strangely affirming arrangement of each chapter around the Torah (Jewish sacred scripture) and the interpretive writings of the Jewish sages as the plot evolves. This positioning rests subtly on the wings of a particular kind of creative, resistant reading of the sacred text. It is a compilation and interpretation of sacred texts in such a way that their violence against women expressing same sex desire is neutralised and transformed.

    The Conundrum of Care in the Construction of Professional Identity: A Foucauldian Lens

    The notion of 'professional' is built on a concept of traditionally male professions and patriarchal social orders. ECEC (early childhood education and care), however, is a female-dominated field characterised by its unique caring practice that is more salient when working with infants and toddlers. This study investigates how a group of Australian early childhood preservice teachers presented themselves professionally on Instagram, in relation to respective infant (0-2) and kindergarten (3-5) practica. Data were drawn from focus group discussions about how the participants shared their practicum experiences on social media, Instagram. The paper is guided by Foucault’s concepts of technologies of the self and self writing. The findings reveal two thematic narratives: 1) in the context of the kindergarten placement, the posts constitute a journey of continuous improvement against all odds. 2) In contrast, the infant placement experiences evoke a sense of struggle and renunciation. The paper concludes with implications for further study beyond the Australian context.
