This practice-based project explores how the past is continually brought into interaction with perceptions of the present, in order that significance might become attached to what we see. In this respect, noticing is a process of relating sensation to memory, where to notice is to remember selectively. The process of painting, for me, then becomes as much about exploring the past as exploring new possibilities in the present. This project investigates how painting constitutes a continual formulating of relations between past and present, as a process of paying attention to how the world unfolds in consciousness, in ways that are provisional and contingent on our experience. In particular, the project reflects on how memory loss might affect this unfolding.en_NZ
